Food preparations at FarmWise in Elkhorn WI.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, I was preparing meals with grade school children at Bente Goldstein’s FarmWise program in Elkhorn, WI. The children were laughing and having a grand time chopping the carrots they had harvested from the ground with their own hands. This was a summer camp program. The children were divided into groups that rotated so each experienced the hands on work aspects that allow the farm to function. Most of these children were from the city and some didn’t even know where milk actually came from. It was then that we discussed the importance of children making these real life connections to the food they consume and how the work and movement gave them a feeling of purpose. Bente was my mentor at the time and currently working on her book “Childhood is a Verb!”. I found her wisdom from years of experience to be so insightful regarding what is missing in childhood currently.

During that time I was inspired to take my years of experience cooking with children and turn it into a book to help others understand the value and magic this provides. Whether you’re working at a childcare center, school or cooking at home I hope this book will be a reference point for anyone looking to cook with children and make it a fun and joyful experience.
